It’s never a fun experience, being hurt or injured, whether it is through surgery or the result of an accident. For many of us, one of the first thoughts that we have is ‘I hope I recover soon’. Fortunately, there are things that we can do to improve our chances of a speedier recovery. If you are about to have surgery, it can be extremely stressful on many levels. If you have any questions or concerns, never be afraid to ask your medical team if you have met them.
You should also ask your doctor if there are any things that you should not do. By this I mean, are there going to be restrictions regarding movement, diet or pain management. Aftercare should also be discussed, in case you need help at home when you leave the hospital.
Aside from the usual recovery routines such as medication and physical therapy, there is also the factor of emotional trauma. Clear meat based broth such as chicken or beef are very good for the healing process. Any soups that start with a clear broth and have lots of fresh vegetables are also very good. When we are ill or hurt, we may not be able to be able to produce the enzymes that we need for our digestive system.
A diet that contains plenty of protein is especially important for the healing process, particularly if muscles have been damaged. The body breaks protein down into amino acids, otherwise known as the body’s building blocks. If you are not able to eat certain protein-rich foods such as:
You may have to get your protein from somewhere else, such as protein powders. These powders can be mixed regular or soy milk, or even warm water. Sip the shake, take it slowly. Your body may have difficulty absorbing the shake so give it a little time. If you can, berries can brighten everything up.
Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoid extra sugar there’s plenty in fruit. Try to avoid so-called empty calorie foods. Everything that you eat should have some nutritional value. Also, try to say no to soda, alcohol, pasta and flour bread.
Instead of fruit juice, eat the fruit. Fruit juice and smoothies contain much more fruit than you would normally eat, and they are packed with sugar. Avoid them if at all possible.
Liver function is important, especially when recovering. To help support it consider beets, parsley, lemon juice and carrots for your diet too. It is important to help your liver where you can because it is going to help it ‘clean’ your blood. The liver also helps to remove residue from any anesthesia and other medicines. Giving the liver everything it needs to do its job properly is going to help you get back to health faster.
- Five – Giving your body everything that it needs in the way of vitamins and minerals is essential for healing. Otherwise, it would be like trying to fill a bath using one glass of water at a time. You should concentrate on antioxidants as well as Vitamins A, C, E and Zinc. Green tea, unless you have high blood pressure, is also helpful.
- Six – Routine exercise helps strengthen muscle, tendons, ligaments and even bones. Not only that but it is going to help with circulation too. Do as much as your doctor permits you to do. Rebounders are excellent, if you can, as you become more mobile and able to move around more. You could gently bounce while watching your favourite comedies.
- Seven – Look into homeopathic remedies. These can be very beneficial to the process of stimulating the immune system and increasing healing response time. You should seek the advice of a doctor who practices this kind of medicine
- Eight – Relax, clear your mind and try to stay positive. Meditation can work wonders for ridding your mind of stressful thoughts and worries. Stress can add time to your recovery, and we are trying to reduce it not make it take longer. Do whatever soothes you the most, whatever it might be. If you are permitted a long soak in a hot tub, then do it. For your bed, a little lavender is great for soothing the sense (it is strong so you only need a small amount).
Playing music won’t harm you either, but it could do you a lot of good!
